Half Marathon Top Tips To Help Prepare You For Your Best Performance

As we approach race day, we often find that our nerves start to kick in and sometimes self-doubt will rear its ugly head, so we want to help you put those last-minute jitters to bed by sharing some tip tips with you as you #runelli!

1. Get familiar with the course – if you’re not local, don’t panic – you can check out the route map online. This should help you plan for toilet breaks and show you where to re-hydrate at the water station. Runners’ regard it as an undulating course that can be breezy at times (being on the Millennium Coastal Path) but also attracts lots of PB’s!

2. Plan your travel to and from the race – whether you are local or travel from a distance, it’s essential to plan ahead to avoid undue stress on the day. Make sure you know the timing of road closures, plan for any traffic delays, make sure you find out where to park and the distance to the start line. Being prepared will help you arrive in the right frame of mind to run your race!

3. Trust in your training! Avoid strength exercises and keep to your taper plan. Exercising the day before the race isn’t necessary as you have already done all the preparation you need.

4. Prepare yourself by making sure you:

  • Hydrate well leading up to the race
  • Don’t try anything new (including new gear, exercises, or foods/nutrition) and
  • Get your kit ready the day before (don’t forget your pins for your bib too!)

5. Try to get a good night’s sleep – to help, there are a few things you can try:

  • Avoid eating a heavy meal late evening.
  • Dim the lights, read a book or listen to relaxing sounds to help you drift off.
  • Lastly, avoid using your phone or watching TV late at night, as this can prevent you from having a good night’s sleep.

The last thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy the race!
