Overcoming Obstacles: MJ’s Journey to Her First 10K

Meet MJ, an incredible athlete preparing for her first 10K at the Tata Steel Llanelli 10k & Half Marathon that’s set to take place on 16th February 2025. In May 2023, while playing netball, MJ suffered a severe injury, breaking her tibia and fibula. The surgery she underwent left her with the daunting news that she might never participate in sports again.

However, MJ’s strength and determination have been truly inspiring. Living with autism has given her a unique focus that has fueled her recovery. She said:

“It was emotional to be told my athletic days were over, but I was determined to get back.”

With the support of her clubs that include Dragons Netball, Pencoed Panthers, and Porthcawl Triathlon—she has cheered on fellow athletes while using a wheelchair for three months.

Since then, MJ has made remarkable strides. She began swimming again in July and excelled in her first swim event in August, winning her age category. Now, as she prepares for the Llanelli 10K, she feels a mix of emotions, adding:

“It’s going to be a walk-jog, but an amazing day with my Porthcawl Triathlon Club members.”

MJ chose Llanelli for its supportive community and well-organized course. Her message to others facing challenges is clear:

“Don’t let obstacles stop you. Keep pushing forward, listen to your doctors, and you will get through it.”

MJ’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and support, we can overcome even the toughest obstacles. As she approaches the start line, she embodies resilience and the spirit of perseverance.
